Lots of people, guys and girls, recommend Plenty of Fish online dating (which I dub Plenty-Of-Flesh) because it’s free. I’ve been a member there twice now, and I haven’t been impressed either time.
The site places a lot of emphasis on photos, which has led to people judging one another not by their messages, but solely by looks. I’m not impressed with the forum moderator either, who has a firm yet obnoxious and stuck-up attitude to posts that raise questionable suggestions issues, even with the site.
Many of the people there have been rude and/or full of hot air, both in the forums and through messaging. Even the friendliest of messages went ignored - the sent messages list proved extremely helpful in finding out just where they were going.
Plenty of Fish advertises itself as a dating site, which is my biggest disappointment: the only people who’d enjoy Plenty of Fish are the average loud, outgoing people who already have “great” lives and have no intention of being serious.
As with most other places I’d suggest someone experience it for themselves, if only for them to reach their own conclusion. I’ve had much better results with Match and Perfect Match.

I was on POF for about a year and a half. Here are a few thoughts and some experiences of mine concerning that dating scene.
First, the saying “You get what you pay for” sticks out in my mind. There may be the odd success story, but as far as I see it, they are few and far between. You may have had a bad experience on pay sites too, but sometimes you can get your money back.
But POF is free, so you really shouldn’t have too high of an expectation. Remember, “You get what you pay for” because it certainly applies to POF.
Here’s a tip I will share with all of you. Before signing up to these sites, free or not. Check out their forums, if they have them. They may give you an idea of what some of the members are like. Read their posts and see what kind of attitudes and outlooks are being displayed. In general, doing this might give you an idea of what type of people frequent the site(s). Check out other independent reviews of whatever site you are interested in. Do a little homework first, it may just pay off in saving you time, effort, perhaps even some heartache.
I used to post on the forums at POF, and didn’t really get too much hassle from the moderators. I tend to be outspoken sometimes (not as a habit though). I noticed that one moderator, I believe his handle is “Late”, would very much remind and enforce the rules, to a point of overzealousness. Yet when he participated in a thread, he would frequently break the very rules he would punish others for. As if they did not apply to him. Things like going off topic, blatant favoritism of one poster over another, things such as this. The flip side to this is one of the other mods. I believe his handle is “Tickettoride”. He was very fair, and had a knack at knowing when to be lenient, or hardass.
In the year and a half that I was part of that site, I dated 4 women. Here, in a nutshell, are my experiences:
Girl #1 : Alcoholic. I dated her for about three weeks. Every time I spoke to her on the phone, or we met for a date, she was either drinking, or already drunk.
Girl #2: Same as Girl #1.
Girl #3: Pothead. I saw her for about a month. Most of the time she would spend her free time sitting up in her room rolling and smoking doobies, with her friend, and making music CD’s on her computer. Funniest thing is that she wondered why she couldn’t get custody of her kid? Gee, wonder why????
Girl #4: 4 different kids from 4 different fathers, no word of a lie. She came on as the clingy type at first. But if you understand anything about human nature, the clingy type usually turn into control freaks when they think they have your trust and your heart. Sure enough, she started to try and run the show. After I broke it off with her, she continued with stalker like behavior.
Those were my experiences concerning POF, your mileage may vary.
Just one more thing. Internet dating shouldn’t be the be all and end all of one’s dating strategy, just one more tool. Just like trying to meet someone through volunteering, sports, church, or other avenues to meet that special someone. Ideally, one should try and combine ALL these aspects in finding the “one”.
i was recomended by a freind to try plenty of fish, so i did. At fisr i was so ecxited because everything seemed Pretty cool, but as soon as i got to meet Peole and talk to them i knew that there was somthing wrong. i mean i dont want to bash on the site because ultimately it was my decison to join it. however, i am an honest, resPectful Person and i did my hoPes that i was going to find my “boyfriend” in there. MY exPereince in POF was horrible because one of the guys i met with was gay, the other one bisexual, and the last one a big wanna be Player. i know that not all the Peole in that site are weird or anything. i mean seriously i got nothing against gay or bi, but i think i desrved the right to know their sexual orientation, and not to be Played with my feelings. cause my feelings were hurt. anyways i learned to move on with my life, but yeha never going back to that web site.
There’s another free internet dating site that’s just as bad as POF. It’s datehookup.com. I would like to see this site do a review on it and it would conclude that DHU is just as bad as POF. On DHU you have the inmates running the asylum.
